    Hi Melanie!

Today the option for an automated trendline in Charts is not available, though we do have some requests for it. I'm happy to had you to it as well.

In the meantime, I do have a workaround for you to calculate a trendline for a chart. Below are some steps.

Either in your Chart data, or in a Spreadsheet, you can calculate your trendline. Here's how the math works.

    • avg x = average of the x-axis values
    • avg y = average of the y-axis values
    • Slope = sum of Col 3 divided by the sum of Col 4
    • Intercept = avg y value minus the Slope times the avg x value
    • Col 1 = diff x, i.e. the difference of the x-axis value minus avg x
    • Col 2 = diff y, i.e. the difference of the y-axis value minus avg y
    • Col 3 = Col 1*Col 2, or diff x times diff y
    • Col 4 = Col 1*Col 1, or diff x times diff x
    • Trendline values = (Slope times x-axis value) plus Intercept

The values in the Trendline values column would be what you use in your chart to show the trend. I my example, I have 12 rows, but you can add more or delete as you need.

Let me know what questions you might have above. In the meantime, I'll keep you apprised of the progress for automated trendlines in Charts. Thanks, and happy Friday!
