Update Datasets in a table chain template not working
AnsweredHi,
I was trying to use the 'update dataset in a table chain template' (https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058919852-Update-Datasets-in-a-Table-chain-template) to update/overwrite my dataset imported to a table. My chain looks like this, similar to https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050552311-Extract-Data-from-Oracle-Hyperion-Financial-Management-to-Workiva-as-a-File.
Here shows my setting for the 'Run Chain' command, I renamed the chain template 'Update HFM Extracts' and selected 'Replace dataset' in the Replace frequency field.
The 'Update HFM Extracts' chain looks like this (no major change from the template) and below shows the 'Runtime inputs' setting for the 'Replace frequency' input.
Here shows the setting for the 'Create File' command:
My problem is that although the chain was successfully executed, instead of updating the table, it kept adding new entries into the table (i.e. appending). What should I do to fix this?
Thanks!

Hi Lina,
I would look at the execution on each run, specifically the Create File Command. Look at the Inputs tab and see what the file Name is. Then compare that against the last run. If the file name isn't the same, that's why the import is adding duplicative rows. Also check in the Update Table Sets Chain to see if the unimport and delete happened successfully.

0Another thing, I am not sure why you have Create File and Import File in the parent level Chain. These actions are being done in the child Chain. I believe you can remove these.
0Hmm, I see where (part of) my problem was Tony, the 'Create File' and 'Import File' commands are already part of the template/child chain, I don't need them again in the parent chain anymore. So I removed them and the chain now looks like this:
However, the table is still not replaced properly, it sometimes updates the records (i.e. adds NEW records to the table), sometimes replaces part of the old records but not all of them. I also compared the file Name in the Create File Command (Input Tab) from different runs, and the file names are different. Unimport and delete commands were successful. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks!

0I would need screenshots of the Log tab on the Commands you highlighted to comment further.
0Hey Tony, so I tested plenty of times more, but it seems that the chain is working properly now, i.e. old records are completely replaced with new records, not sure what were the issues before, but I'm glad they are fixed now.
Thanks for all help!
Lina
