Just found a workaround for this issue in another post about IF formulas. The solution was to click in the cell then go to the edit tab/insert/symbol/select wingdings in the drop down/click the special characters tab/select non breaking space/click insert symbol. Also, set the format to text. I was then able to create the label reference. It seems inserting the symbol was just a one-time thing to allow me to set up the label reference (i.e. I do not need to keep the symbol in there for it to continue updating).

I was able to put an apostophre before the date and then attach a label reference.  Then I went in a removed the apostrophe and updated label references.

That is much simpler than what I did! Thanks!
