ESG metric value collection through Workiva Tasks vs. Certifications
Collecting ESG metric values through Workiva Tasks has numerous benefits over using source files (like a data collection spreadsheet). However, we do have some pain points, and whenever I look at the Certifications functionality, I'm puzzled why some of this is not available for use with ESG metrics.
Specifically, some of the appeal of Certifications that appears to match pain points of ESG metric value collection through Tasks includes:
- The increased formality of submitting & approving with the signing feature.
- The ability to create a more customized experience and add custom text through the Letters feature. (While we know custom text can be added through ESG metric instructions, since instructions must be managed metric-by-metric to my knowledge, the templated approach of certification letters seems like a better fit.) This is related to point #1 because we have a very formal metric value sign-off process that was clunky to manage in data collection source files and will probably be even clunkier to execute with Workiva Tasks, but between points #1 and #2 Certifications/Letters seems to offer exactly what we need.
- The ability to customize the text for the initiation notification e-mail as well as for automated reminder e-mails.
- (Potentially) the ability to add multiple metric values in one request. OK, so this isn't available in Certifications now since it doesn't interact with metrics at all, but with a Letter you can add multiple questions. If there were a way of building a Letter and including form fields tied to ESG program metrics, it could solve the challenge in circumstances in which we want to juxtapose related metrics as part of a single task (related to #350142). Meanwhile, a default Letter could be chosen for standard metrics collected using Tasks without a custom-created Letter.
Even the ability to add multiple approver steps, where either everyone or "someone" can advance the process, was a feature missing from the ESG program until recently. And yet in Certifications there is an eerily similar, yet completely distinct process for creating the exact same sort of approval processes. If the two domains (ESG metric value collection and Certifications/Letters) were completely independent but had equivalent features, it wouldn't be a big deal, but as it is, we have some feature envy!
