XBRL Basics
The key things you need to know to be up and running in minutes.
Create an XBRL Profile
A profile contains all the XBRL information you create for a given taxonomy, meaning that one document can have multiple profiles and one profile can be applied to multiple documents.
- 1
- On the XBRL tab in your document, enable XBRL.
- 2
- Click Select Taxonomy next to the Show XBRL switch.
- 3
- Click Create New Profile.
- 4
- Enter profile details and click Save.
After creating a profile, select it from the list and apply it to your document, then you are ready to tag your document. You can switch between profiles at any time using this list.
Set Up a Fiscal Calendar
Fiscal calendars will allow you define your financial dates and apply them to documents in Workiva. Dates defined through your Fiscal calendars can be used to roll your XBRL dates forward. Rolling forward your dates is now as simple as editing the quarter or year in your XBRL profile . Editing these dates will update your usages immediately after saving your change. Any Special Dates you have will need to be manually updated.
- 1
- On the XBRL tab in your document, enable XBRL.
- 2
- On the XBRL toolbar, click Attributes and choose Fiscal Calendars.
- 3
- In the dropdown menu, choose New Calendar.
- 4
- Name the calendar and choose calendar period frequency, as well as whether to use standard quarterly dates (e.g. 03/31 for end of Q1). After making your selections, click Create to save the calendar.
Tagging
When tagging your document, you can view Fact Details from the panel on the right. Facts now automatically flow through links to all usages, but you can disable XBRL from Section Properties. You can also now tag a portion of a table cell’s contents, resulting in fewer warnings when submitting filings.
Added facts will appear in the XBRL outline, found in the Outline panel by clicking the XBRL Outline option. You can use the Add/Re-Add feature to quickly associate an existing fact with an XBRL outline section.
Generate XBRL
You can now generate XBRL for your entire document or just a single section from the XBRL toolbar. You can view various details and generation reports, as well as preview iXBRL, in the generations panel on the right. Previous full generations can be viewed from the right, but section generations are only kept for the current Workiva session.
After running a generation, you can view the calculation report alongside your document as a tab in the XBRL Validations panel. You can use this to see how XBRL values are calculated in your document and view any warnings or errors about those calculations.
